ISLAMABAD: On the directive of interior minister, Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has launched a new SMS service to facilitate the public in tracking their passports.
The newly launched service will allow the applicants to track their passports by sending an SMS containing their tracking number to 9988 whereby the automated system will respond with the information about the status of their passports.
The automated system is programmed to respond in four different scenarios where an applicant would be informed about the box ID and shipment date for passport collection and about the status of passport if it is still in process after verification of facial and Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
According to an announcement of the department, Immigration and Passports Director General Sikander Sultan Raja stated that this is one of the key milestones in easing the process of receiving passports as the hassle for an individual to visit the passport office repeatedly shall be removed and the person can confirm the status of his/her passport through the SMS service.
He also appreciated the efforts of his team and the support from other government departments to utilise the modern communication tools to provide relief to the common man.
The service will be functional immediately and the passport applicants could retrieve information on the status of their passport application as soon they receive their tracking numbers.
This service shall be available to all the applicants who have applied for their passports since March 2013.
Earlier, Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan inaugurated the SMS service at the Ministry of Interior in Islamabad on Sunday.
He also praised the efforts of Sikander Sultan Raja for lessening the bureaucratic hurdles for the common man and using modern means of communication to ease the process of getting passports. He also directed the DG to ensure delivery of ordinary passports in 10 days and the urgent ones within four days.
