4,000 Filipinos sent home

Over 4,000 Filipino workers have been sent home from Saudi Arabia over the past few months, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Friday.
The departure of 79 Filipinos this week brought the total to 4,003, which included 287 mothers and 317 children. A total of 2,274 were from Riyadh and 1,729 from Jeddah. There are 1,761 Filipinos waiting for the Saudi Passport Department to process their paperwork.
The Philippine government began a repatriation program following the Kingdom's crackdown on illegal workers. The Saudi government introduced an amnesty period that ends on Nov. 3.
There are reportedly hundreds of thousands of illegal Filipinos in Saudi Arabia.
An estimated 1.5 million Filipinos are working in the Kingdom, mostly as domestic employees.
