Court annoyed as Zardari fails to appear Issues notices again

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court of Islamabad here on Monday expressed annoyance over the failure of former president Asif Ali Zardari to appear before the court in five corruption references despite the issuance of notices.

The court once again issued notices to Asif Ali Zardari in the references pending against him. A National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor Ch Riaz told the court that the NAB had forwarded the notices to the NAB Sindh after the court issued the same. A NAB Sindh representative then went to the Bilawal House, Karachi, for serving the notices, but he was informed that Asif Ali Zardari was not in the country. The court then put off the matter till October 29.

It was on October 12 when an accountability court of judge Muhammad Bashir Khan, taking cognizance of the matter of pending corruption references against former president Asif Ali Zardari, resumed the hearing. The accountability court re-opened six corruption references against the former president that had been long pending due to Asif Zardari’s presidential immunity.

The corruption references included Ursus tractors, Cotecna, SGS, polo ground and ARY Gold.In the above-mentioned 14-15 years old cases, almost all the accused had been either acquitted or the references were abated to their extent due to the death of one or more accused.

In most of the cases, Asif Ali Zardari has been left the sole accused and the accountability courts had decided that the proceedings against Zardari would be initiated once his presidential immunity expired.
