Temple stampede: BJP defends Madhya Pradesh government

"Ratangarh is not an isolated incidence. Every year such tragedies at different pilgrimages are happening, which must be avoided,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said. (File/PTI)
As a war of words broke out over the stampede in Datia in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP on Monday defended Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Government saying the incident should be treated as a national calamity.
As the BJP Government in Madhya Pradesh came under severe criticism from the Congress over handling of the crisis, the party said such incidents had happened in the past.  The Centre should formulate plans for religious places, which then can be followed by the states.
“The BJP denounces Congress politics on Ratangarh (in Datia district) tragedy. In such a tragedy, all parties should discuss the ways as to how to avoid such tragedies in future. Ratangarh is not an isolated incidence. Every year such tragedies at different pilgrimages are happening, which must be avoided,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
He said many Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kamal Nath had attacked the BJP Government in the state over the tragedy. They should stop playing  politics over the dead, he said.
The BJP leader said, “106 lives lost in Shabarimala tragedy, 350 pilgrims died in at Mandhara Devi in Maharashtra, 63 peoples lost their lives in Kunda in UP, 40 people died in a similar stampede in Kumbh Mela at Nasik.”
“The Centre must treat this as a national calamity and must plan for a full-proof mechanism to avoid recurrence of such accidents,” Javadekar added.
