115 killed in Madhya Pradesh temple stampede, BJP admits police lapses

Datia: The death toll in the stampede near a famous Madhya Pradesh temple has risen to 115 and the Congress has demanded that the BJP's Shivraj Singh Chouhan step down as Chief Minister of the election-bound state.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has alleged that the police took bribes to let vehicles the bridge where the stampede took place. "Reason for Ratangarh Mata disaster? Police was charging Rs. 200 from each tractor and allowing in no traffic zone. Good Governance in MP?" he tweeted.

The party has blamed the state's police and the administration for the stampede, triggered by the rumour that a bridge across the Sindh river, which devotees were crossing to reach the famous Ratangarh temple in Datia, was about to collapse. (Who said what)

"There was no police arrangement in Madhya Pradesh because of which so many people died," said Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken, calling the tragedy a man-made disaster that could have been avoided.

The allegations have not been denied by the BJP. "There have been some lapses here on part of the police. That will be investigated. But the Congress leaders should not politicise the issue," party spokesperson Dr Narottam Mishra said.

The man under attack, Mr Chouhan, visited Datia, about 400 km from state capital Bhopal, and met the injured in hospital. "A commission of inquiry to look into yesterday's stampede
would be set up within two days," he said. (Highlights)

Mr Chouhan hopes to win a third straight term as chief minister in assembly elections to be held in Madhya Pradesh on November 25. The Congress, which has been out of power in the state since 2003, will use every opportunity to try and ensure he does not get that third term.

Prominent Congress leaders from Madhya Pradesh also questioned the lack of preparedness at the Datia temple, where about 50 people had been washed away at exactly the same spot in 2006.
